Good everyday entry without reaching for a phone
The Bolt Fingerprint Matter makes its best case at a frequently used front or side door. A fingerprint reader lets regular users leave the phone in a pocket, physical number buttons give visitors another way in, and a keyway keeps mechanical entry available. That combination is more useful than making everyone install an app just to enter the house.
Its rounded keypad looks busy beside a plain deadbolt or flat touchscreen. The advantage is a visible, separate button for each digit. A household that likes physical controls may prefer this design; someone trying to make the smart lock disappear into the door probably will not.
This review covers the black-and-satin-nickel BOLT-F-MATTER. The cheaper black Bolt Fingerprint shown on the same store page is a different Wi-Fi/HomeKit variant. Picking a finish is not enough to identify the connection you are buying.
The door sensor earns its place
ULTRALOQ includes a separate door sensor. With it fitted and auto-lock enabled in the app, the lock is designed to wait until the door is closed before locking. That is useful when bringing in several bags or leaving the entrance open for a visitor. A timer that simply starts after unlocking cannot make the same distinction.
The sensor needs space on the inside frame near the lock. Its installation instructions also exclude metal doors that interfere with its magnet. This is an extra piece of visible hardware, not sensing built invisibly into the deadbolt.
Treat this as a lock/app feature rather than a promise of a door-open sensor in every Matter platform. We have not tested its sensing, fingerprint recognition or motor noise. The design offers useful safeguards, but the specifications cannot establish how smoothly it works at your door.
The manufacturer app still has a job
Fingerprints are enrolled through Xthings Home, formerly U home. You can use that app alongside a Matter connection; adding Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings does not remove the enrollment tool. It does mean the lock is less attractive if your aim is to manage everything in one ecosystem app.
There is no Wi-Fi radio in this variant. Matter control needs a compatible controller and Thread border router, while local Xthings work uses Bluetooth. ULTRALOQ says the Bluetooth connection sleeps and may need a front button press to wake it. Its optional Wi-Fi Bridge cannot maintain the connection, so buying that accessory is not a substitute for Thread coverage at the entrance.
There is also no Apple home key or other NFC wallet tap. Paying for Matter gets shared lock control, not tap-to-unlock or UWB approach detection. Choose the Bolt because fingerprints and PINs are the methods your household wants.
Eight batteries and a key worth keeping nearby
The US package includes eight AA batteries. ULTRALOQ advertises up to a year with alkaline cells for the Matter model, but that is a manufacturer estimate, not an interval we have measured. An eight-cell replacement is a real recurring cost, particularly if the door sees heavy use.
Unlike several newer locks, this one has no emergency USB power port. If the batteries are exhausted, the backup physical key is the useful fallback. Keeping that key inside the locked house defeats its purpose.
The exterior is IP65-rated, while the interior assembly is not weatherproof. The inside battery housing is about 5.4 inches tall. Check its space around an existing handleset as well as the view from outside.
The standard installation covers a 1½- or 2⅛-inch main bore, 2⅜- or 2¾-inch backset and 1⅜–1¾-inch door thickness. A thicker door needs the appropriate extra kit, offered up to 2¼ inches. This replaces the deadbolt and cylinder; it does not preserve an existing lock just by fitting over its thumb turn.
Budget at the base price until the discount is confirmed
On September 10, 2026, the exact Matter variant was available at a $199.99 base price. Its page also displayed $176, but the linked promotion's terms ended on September 6. Budget at $199.99 and accept the lower figure only if it is honored at checkout. The lock qualifies for free standard shipping within the contiguous US; tax and any fitting work remain extra.
If an Apple household also needs a $129 HomePod mini, the base-price hardware total becomes $328.99 before tax. Reusing a suitable existing hub makes a much stronger purchase than buying one solely to connect this lock.
Aqara U400 was $269.99, or $70 more than the Bolt's base price, and adds supported Apple hands-free entry, wallet options and emergency USB power. The U200 was $169.99 with a separate fingerprint keypad and home key taps, and preserves compatible existing lock hardware. Its larger interior retrofit motor is the compromise.
eufy E30 is worth comparing only if a discounted, returnable unit is actually available. It adds built-in Wi-Fi and USB emergency power, but lacks the Bolt's door-position sensing. Keep a working fingerprint or keypad lock if it already makes coming home easy; a new Matter connection alone may not justify replacing it.
