Shelly 2PM Gen4 is worth the €10 premium over Gen3 when you want the option to move between a Matter/Wi-Fi home and a Zigbee setup. Its compact hardware, metering and local controls are useful, but the cheaper Gen3 already covers the everyday switching and blind-control jobs. Choose Gen4 for that extra flexibility, not for an assumed improvement in the lights or blinds themselves.

Spend the extra €10 for a reason
2PM Gen4's appeal is flexibility in a small box. It combines two switched outputs with metering, or uses the pair to control one compatible AC blind motor. The grey terminals distinguish it from the black-terminal Gen3, but once installed behind the wall controls, neither changes the room's appearance.
The current EU price is €29.90 for one or €58.90 for two, including VAT and excluding any shipping charge. On September 9, 2026, 2PM Gen3 was €19.90 for one or €38.90 for two. Across four windows, the listed four-packs were €115.90 and €76.90 respectively. The newer generation therefore adds real cost before the electrician arrives.
Pay that difference if its additional radio option has a use. Both generations already provide the core switch, meter and blind functions. Replacing installed Gen3 modules solely because Gen4 exists would be a poor use of the installation budget.
Four logos do not mean four networks at once
Matter is included on Gen4, and its Wi-Fi radio supports Wi-Fi 6 on the 2.4 GHz band. It also offers Zigbee as an alternative operating mode. That is useful if a future home or automation project is built around a Zigbee coordinator instead of Matter.
It is not a bridge between those systems. Switching to Zigbee uses alternative firmware; the Matter/Wi-Fi profile does not keep running alongside it. Shelly's BTHome components are also unavailable in Zigbee mode. Buy it expecting to choose a mode, not to share one relay across every logo printed in the marketing.
For Matter, you need a compatible controller but no Thread border router or Shelly hub. Wi-Fi 6 support alone is not evidence that it will be more reliable in a crowded wall box than Gen3; we have not measured radio performance.
Compact hardware with the same electrical limits
The module is 37 × 42 × 16 mm, matching Gen3's quoted dimensions. It keeps two local switch inputs and provides individual power monitoring in switch mode. This is a practical way to retain matching wall plates while automating two lighting circuits, provided both are on the same phase.
The AC rating is still 10 A per channel and 16 A combined. Gen4 does not buy you two unrestricted 16 A outputs, dimming or isolated dry contacts. An electrician must confirm the circuit and load, not just the available space behind the switch.
For a blind, cover mode coordinates the outputs as one motor controller. It supports positioning and venetian-slat adjustment, with calibration and detailed behavior set in Shelly. A 24 V DC power-supply option for relay switching does not make it a universal DC motor controller.
Good for people who will use the controls
The built-in browser interface, local schedules and integration tools make the 2PM more interesting than a basic app-only relay. Shelly Cloud is optional for local use. Metering and motor adjustments give you useful control, although a Matter app may expose less detail than Shelly's interface.
Gen4 is a reasonable new purchase when you want those tools and the option of Zigbee later. If the requirement is simply to automate two circuits or one blind over Matter today, compare Gen3 first. The savings grow with every module, while the visible result in the room stays the same.
